Photo Essay: FriFotos Sand Edition

This week’s Twitter #FriFotos theme is sand. Everything and anything to do with sand.  Since I’m finally ready to make No Checked Bags live (although still a lot of design work to go), this seems like the perfect post to kick things off. I am a huge fan of #FriFotos, and those behind the weekly Twitter addiction…and this week’s theme is oh so fitting as I’m headed out tonight to one of my favorite islands in the world — Ambergris Caye Belize.

Blankenberge Sand Festival in Belgium

Phantom Manor attraction from Disneyland Paris

Pirates of the Caribbean attraction from Disneyland Paris

This past year, the annual Blankenberge Sand Sculpture Festival featured the theme of Disneyland Paris. I flew out for the festival solely because it was Disney themed this time! You can read more about the festival itself in my AOL/Gadling post.

Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker "Go Slow" sign

The small island of Caye Caulker in Belize is known for it’s “Go Slow” motto and attitude.  When you first get on the island from the water taxi and pier area, you see this sign in the sandy street.  The island has no paved roads and the main mode of transportation is golf carts and bicycles.

Ambergris Caye, Belize

Ambergris Caye, Belize

This is my favorite spot on Ambergris Caye, Belize.  This was taken just a day after Hurricane Rina in October 2011. The water was so calm and you can see some of the sea grass that had washed all the way back onto to the beach.

French Polynesia

Rangiroa atoll in French Polynesia

Rangiroa is a coral atoll in French Polynesia which is a haven for scuba divers. While the beaches had sand, much of the shoreline was made up from small pieces of coral that had washed ashore.

Private motu in Bora Bora

This was without a doubt one of my favorite afternoons in French Polynesia. The crystal clear waters and the yellow sand were just stunning.  We had just missed one of three cyclones that formed while we were there so we lucked out with at least one sunny day.

East Coast of Taiwan

Strange rock and sand formations on Taiwan's east coast

Taiwan’s east coast is one of the famed spots on the island.  I love visiting the beaches on the coast for the strange rock and sand formations like these that dot the scenic highway.

2011 Fulong Beach Sand Sculpture Festival in Taiwan

Each summer, Taiwan holds a sand sculpture festival of its own, which is typically quite impressive.  This is just one of the sculptures from last year celebrating the 100 year anniversary of the Taiwan, ROC.
