Are you planning a trip through California and looking for a boutique hotel to stay in rather than a large chain. Here are five recommendations depending on where your travels in California take you.

Yosemite View Lodge

Located in El Portal, Yosemite View Lodge offers modern amenities in the heart of one of California’s most popular national parks. The resort features indoor and outdoor pools and spas, on site dining, and stunning mountain and/or river views near Yosemite Valley.

Enjoy the Yosemite View Lodge restaurant that overlooks the Merced River, or prepare a meal in your in-room kitchenette. There are other restaurants nearby like Cedar House Restaurant or Parkside Pizza.

Traveling with a pet? Yosemite View Lodge is also ideal for travelers looking for pet-friendly boutique lodging.

Biltmore Hotel and Suites

Boutique lodging in San Francisco can break the bank, so if you’re looking for other options around the Bay Area, consider the Biltmore Hotel and Suites in Santa Clara. The hotel is conveniently located near a number of Silicon Valley attractions like the Winchester Mystery House, Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, and the 49ers Museum.

The Biltmore Hotel offers a variety of accommodations including Garden Rooms, Tower Suites, and an Executive Suite. It also offers several pet-designed garden rooms on the ground floor for those traveling with pets.

Wild Palms Hotel

Another boutique hotel option near San Francisco is the Wild Palm Hotel, a Joie de Vivre Boutique Hotel. This Mediterranean -style hotel is located in Sunnyvale, in the heart of the Silicon Valley. Rooms are elegantly appointed and the property has a year-round heated pool and onsite fitness center.

The Wild Palms Hotel allows pets, but the rules are fairly strict so be sure to review the Wild Palms Hotel pet policy closely.

Spanish Garden Inn

Traveling down the coast of Southern California, the Spanish Garden Inn is a great boutique hotel in Santa Barbara. Enjoy Spanish Colonial decor, including a courtyard with a tiled fountain and tabletop fire circle. While it’s not strictly an adults-only resort, the vibe is more romantic, so this is better for an anniversary getaway or honeymoon.

There are 23 rooms and suites at the Spanish Garden Inn, each with its own private balcony or garden patio and at least 400 square feet of living space. Each room is furnished with the owner’s own paintings and other unique items. The Spanish Garden Inn is a great example of a hotel maintaining its Old World charm while integrating modern amenities. You’ll find the French press and electric kettle in a leather desk, and the minibar fridge in a chest of drawers.

Avanti Hotel

If your travels include Palm Springs, consider Avanti Hotel. Located in the Movie Colony neighborhood, this mid-century property has views of San Jacinto Mountains. There is a pool, secluded hot tub, and a beautiful fire pit for the cold winter nights. The 10 guest rooms have private patios and kitchenettes. The Avanti Hotel has a pretty lengthy set of guidelines and policies, like a strict maximum of two guests per room, no minors under 12 unattended at any time, no thong bikinis, etc.
