Planning a trip through California and looking for boutique lodging that doesn’t cost a fortune? Consider staying in some lesser-known cities close to major tourism hubs, which can sometimes save you a bundle.

Opt for Irvine Over Anaheim

Atrium Hotel at Orange County Airport

The Atrium Hotel at Orange County Airport is great if you’re flying into Southern California’s John Wayne Airport. It’s only a 30-minute drive to the major attractions like Disneyland. Leisure travelers can take advantage of warm Southern California temperatures and enjoy the pool with private cabanas, while business travelers will appreciate access to a private executive business center. The hotel offers complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport, and there are museums, malls, and other attractions nearby.

Hotel Irvine Jamboree Center

Another Orange County option is the Hotel Irvine Jamboree Center. The sleek, contemporary property features a variety of room types, including a patio suite with two balconies and bathrooms — perfect for groups or families. It refers to itself as a lifestyle hotel, blending the needs of business and leisure travelers. Don’t miss their 24/7 Marketplace, which offers locally-sourced food and even delivery to your room!

In addition to being less than 30 minutes from Disneyland, the Hotel Irvine is only 15 minutes from Newport Beach.

Northern California Wine Country

Kenwood Inn and Spa

It’s no secret that Napa can be pricey, especially during peak visitor season, which is one reason some oenophiles are turning to Sonoma. Check out Kenwood Inn and Spa, a gorgeous adults-only Mediterranean-style hotel. While rates still fall within the luxury range, it’s a bargain when compared to other properties. Kenwood Inn and Spa has less than 30 suites, all purposely lacking televisions. Unwind and unplug in the lush courtyard by the pool or in one of the two hot tubs. Book a spa treatment or the Bath Butler service that brings the luxury spa experience to your guest room.

San Francisco / Bay Area

Rosewood Sand Hill

If you’re visiting San Francisco, consider staying in a less-expensive city like Menlo Park. The Rosewood Sand Hill is located in Silicon Valley and offers stunning views of the Santa Cruz Mountains. It’s less than an hour’s drive to San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, and the East Bay cities. Rosewood Sand Hill has 80 regular rooms and 31 suites, ranging from just over 500 to 2,300 square feet.  All rooms include private balconies, fully-stocked mini bars, designer toiletries, and a separate rain shower and marble tub. Book a dinner at the Michelin-starred Madera and a spa treatment at Sense Spa. Other services include a hair salon, health club, free shuttle, and an outdoor pool with a poolside bar.

Heritage Inn

Heritage Inn is located in Milpitas, at the southern end of the Bay Area, north of San Jose. Rooms include a microwave, refrigerator, work desk, and cable TV. The budget-friendly property has a seasonal outdoor pool, free breakfast, free Wi-Fi, and parking for buses and trailers. The San Jose Airport is six miles away, and other attractions like Great America Theme Park, Great Mall of the Bay Area, and Rivermark Village are nearby.
