Hipmunk Hotels: Exploring the Southwest Mountain States
Are you planning a road trip through the southwestern Mountain States? Consider some of these cheaper spots for lodging along your journey.
Santa Fe, NM
Santa Fe is the capital of New Mexico, and lodging can be quite pricey at certain times of the year. If you really want to book a hotel in Santa Fe, consider the off season, typically between November and March. Another helpful tip is to book early and prepay your hotel, as some places may offer discounts. Look at options like the DoubleTree Hotel located halfway between the airport and downtown. Rates can be as low as just over $100 a night in the off season.
Albuquerque, NM
Hotels in Albuquerque tend to be quite cheap in comparison to Santa Fe. Renowned for its majestic mountains and stunning landscapes, a visit to Albuquerque should be on your Mountain States itinerary. Some “must-do” activities in Albuquerque include taking a hot air balloon ride over the Rio Grande Valley, hiking dormant volcanoes, taking a leisurely stroll through Old Town, and mountain biking in the Sandia Mountains. For another beautiful view of Albuquerque, take the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway as it ascends the 10,378-foot mountain peak.
Laughlin, NV
Located along the Colorado River, Laughlin is a great stop-over on any road trip. It’s located only 90 miles south of Las Vegas, but it seems worlds apart. You’ll still find the 24-hour casino-gambling vibe, but there are only a dozen or so spots. The real draw with Laughlin is its wealth of water-related activities. Rent watersports equipment or head out on a boat tour along the Colorado River, see the famous London Bridge in nearby Lake Havasu, Arizona. At night, book a dinner cruise on a paddle-wheel boat. Be sure to check the calendar of events as Laughlin hosts a number of very popular annual events and festivals.
Henderson, NV
If you’re headed into Las Vegas, consider booking a hotel room in Henderson, Nevada. Located about 20 minutes from the strip, you’ll typically save a bundle over regular Las Vegas hotels. Henderson is close to a variety of more family-oriented attractions as well — Lake Mead, Lake Las Vegas, and Hoover Dam. Look at properties like Railroad Pass Hotel and Casino that is only a 15-minute drive to Hoover Dam and Lake Mead. Free Wi-Fi and onsite dining options make this a great bargain for under $100 a night.
Fort Collins, CO
Fort Collins is one of the largest cities in Colorado, around 65 miles away from Denver. It’s the home of Colorado State University, so you’ll find the city definitely has a student vibe. There is a thriving beer culture in the city, with an annual brewer’s festival held each June. The real draw for visitors to Fort Collins is the outdoor attractions. Go camping, fishing, hiking, and more. There are around 50 parks, 280-plus miles of biking and walking trails, golf courses, and more. Hit the rink and play a game of hockey, or go for a leisurely skate. Fort Collins even has a skateboard park and off-leash dog parks if you’re traveling with your four-legged friend!
