Get ready to stay in one of the most historic airport hotels around (after it’s built, that is). The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey recently approved the construction of a hotel at JFK International Airport that will turn the TWA Flight Center (a registered historic landmark) into a 500-plus room hotel. Construction on the $265 million project is slated to begin in early 2016, and the hotel should open its doors to guests near the end of 2018.
Can’t wait that long? Then head to any of these renowned airport hotels, which are all but guaranteed to transform the airport waiting game into a relaxing, enjoyable stay.
1. Crown Plaza Changi Airport, Singapore
Funky Crown Plaza, linked to Terminal 3, offers high-class amenities and a tranquil atmosphere — complete with tropical gardens, a landscaped pool, and garden views — that allows weary travelers to escape from the bustle of the airport. A 24-hour fitness center, on-site spa, and award-winning buffet fulfill the promise of relaxation.
2. The Custom Hotel, Los Angeles
Chic and hip, the Custom Hotel is true to its name: Guests can personalize their rooms by switching up the LED color-changing lighting and choosing the music via in-room iPod/MP3 docking stations. Multiple lounges and a stadium-style deck provide spaces for travelers to connect and unwind, while noise-canceling windows and premium bedding guarantee a good night’s sleep. The hotel is located about one mile from LAX’s main terminal, but guests can take advantage of free shuttle service.
3. Dubai International Airport Hotel, United Arab Emirates
With three locations — in Concourses A, B, and C — Dubai International offers tremendous convenience for travelers. The high-end establishment boasts a fitness center, steam room, Jacuzzi, and swimming room. Guests who are willing to pay a little extra can enjoy massage chairs, fruit baskets, and chocolates in the privacy of their own rooms.
4. Grand Hyatt Dallas Fort Worth, Texas
Located inside Terminal D, the Grand Hyatt offers luxury accommodations that have earned it a AAA Four Diamond rating. On-site dining options include a sushi bar, Jamba Juice, and an Irish pub and restaurant. The elegant guest rooms offer granite bathrooms, soaking tubs, plush bedding, and high-speed internet access. The hotel also boasts a 24-hour business center, a full-service spa, a 24-hour fitness center, and a rooftop saline pool.
5. Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport, Florida
Located between Terminals A and B, the Hyatt offers exceptional convenience for early-morning flights. The hotel makes things even easier on travelers by providing its own airline check-in counters and luggage retrieval and delivery services. Day-use rooms are also available for travelers with lots of time to kill between flights. A splash pool, sundeck, large rooms, and award-winning dining options make this one of the most accommodating airport hotels around.
6. Hilton Chicago O’Hare Airport, Illinois
The Hilton has cornered the market on hassle-free commutes to O’Hare thanks to its underground walkways to the airport’s terminals. People traveling for business and pleasure alike will benefit from a good night’s sleep with the help of soundproofed windows and black-out drapes. A variety of dining options, a live music club, and an indoor pool, sauna, and steam room provide plenty of entertainment options for travelers who aren’t quite ready to hit the sheets.
7. Sofitel London Heathrow, United Kingdom
Just a short stroll from Terminal 5, Sofitel boasts chic amenities in addition to convenience. An award-winning spa, soundproofed windows, and five onsite bars and restaurants — including a champagne bar — help ensure that guests have an enjoyable stay.
