Hipmunk Hotels: Exploring Escondido, Costa Mesa, and Other Lesser-Known California Cities

La Jolla Beach - No Checked Bags
When visiting San Diego beaches, consider Escondido as your home base.

If you’re visiting California, be sure to check out some of these hidden gems around the state.

Costa Mesa, California

Costa Mesa is sometimes called the City of the Arts, and shopaholics will want to take note. With locally-owned boutiques and beautifully-designed malls like South Coast Plaza, there’s no shortage of retail therapy. Costa Mesa also offers a dizzying array of award-winning eateries, including everything from casual bakeries to high-end establishments with chefs who worked in Michelin-starred eateries elsewhere in the country.

Art enthusiasts will appreciate the events at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts and the OC Fair and Event Center. The best reason to stay here, however, is that it’s close to John Wayne Orange County Airport, and select hotels in Costa Mesa offer shuttle service to nearby Disneyland.

Orange, California

When people hear Orange, California, they often think of Orange County. The city of Orange, however, is less well known. The city’s history dates back to the early 19th century, with the first landholder recorded in 1801.

If you’re visiting Orange, don’t miss historical attractions like Grijalva Adobe Site. This is the original adobe home of Juan Pablo Grijalva, Orange’s first ranchero and colonizer. A more recognizable spot is Watson Drugs and Soda Fountain, the oldest drugstore in Orange County. It’s appeared in a number of commercials and movies, like Cannonball Run with Burt Reynolds.

Escondido, California

The city of Escondido is a perfect jumping off point for exploring the greater San Diego area. Properties like the Hilton Garden Inn in Rancho Bernardo are well under $200 a night, and the area places you just 10 miles from San Diego Wild Animal Park and under 30 miles from Sea World and Legoland.

For a more adult-oriented adventure, Escondido is home to golf courses, boutique wineries, and some great craft breweries. Don’t miss events like Stone Brewing’s Movies and Music in the Park during the summer months or the Cruisin’ Grand classic car cruise.

West Hollywood, California

Known as one of the most hip LGBT spots in Southern California, West Hollywood, or WeHo as most call it, is a great alternative to high-priced downtown Los Angeles. Look for chic, trendy hotels like Andaz West Hollywood, a concept hotel by Hyatt. An 800-square-foot suite with stunning views will set you back around $450 a night, about the same price as a standard room in other parts of Los Angeles. West Hollywood hosts events, book signings, musical events, and more, and it’s close to most major attractions in Hollywood itself.

Monterey, California

You might be wondering why Monterey is on a list with lesser-known California cities. While it’s known for its aquarium, there’s a lot more to see and do in the city. Don’t miss Monterey’s arts scene or incredible regional wines. You’ll also find food and adventure tours, water activities, and a growing nightlife scene. Look for several craft breweries in the city as well.

California is a large and diverse state, with everything from stunning shorelines to majestic snow-capped mountains. Even if you’re not in a major tourist hub, you’ll still find plenty to enjoy.
