Planning a trip to some of the midwest states in the US? Here’s a look at five cities that may provide some affordable lodging options.

Traverse City, Michigan

Located on the shores of the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay, Traverse City is actually one of the top vacation spots in northwest Michigan. Traverse City offers a large number of things to do, differing depending on the time of year you visit. Spring is when everything is in bloom and you’ll see beautiful cherry trees and endless fields of flowers in the woodlands. Tons of visitors take to the beach in the summertime, and with over 150 inland lakes and miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, it’s no surprise why. Be sure to go wine tasting in the Fall, and pack your snow gear come Winter.

Springfield, Missouri

Springfield, Missouri is considered the main city of the Ozarks, and it’s also the birthplace of Route 66. If you want to stay nearby to Route 66, look at the Walnut Street Inn, a boutique property only a block away.

If you’re interested in outdoor activities, Springfield is home to countless trails and nature areas. Kids will enjoy the Dickerson Park Zoo, while shopaholics will love spending a day or two at Battlefield Mall, one of the largest indoor shopping areas in Missouri with 190 stores.

Madison, Wisconsin

If you’re planning to visit Madison, Wisconsin, you’ll find no shortage of things to do in the city. Take a free tour of the State Capitol, or rent a bike to explore the city and nearby hiking and biking trails. Summer is obviously a popular time for travelers to visit Madison, as the city is home to many beaches, lakes, and outdoor activities. If you’re looking for the best hotel rates, consider the winter season. Also, be sure to check football schedules if you’re traveling between August and December. Hotels can sell out quick when the Badgers have a home game!

Lincoln, Nebraska

Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska and one of the most populous cities in the state. The State Capitol is one of the tallest in the country and visitors can take a trip to the 14th floor to check out the observation level. There are interesting eats and drinks in town as well — like Yia Yia’s known for its funky pizzas and huge beer selection. Lazlo’s is Nebraska’s first brew-pub and it’s located in Lincoln as well. Take in a Husker football game at Memorial Stadium, or check out some of the more unique things to do in Lincoln.

Akron, Ohio

Akron is located in the Great Lakes region of Ohio and is one of the largest cities in the state. There is a large arts and culture scene, with multiple performance halls that host acts like the Akron Symphony Orchestra and Children’s Concert Society. You’ll find everything from Broadway musicals to renowned lecturers on stage in Akron.

Hotels in Akron are definitely on the affordable side with some economy hotels, like the Comfort Inn, offering rooms around $80 a night. Looking for a more upscale hotel? consider the Sheraton Suites Akron Cuyahoga Falls, which is a short distance from world-class golf and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. If you’re visiting Akron for business, check out the Holiday Inn Express Akron South Airport Area, which is closer to Akron’s business district.
